Daimler Trucks, the commercial truck division of Mercedez-Benz, has revealed two battery-electric trucks, the eActros, the eActros LongHaul, as well as the GenH2, a new hydrogen fuel cell truck that will have “a range of up to 620 miles (1,000 kilometers).” The electric-fuel cell truck should start customer trials by 2023, however, production is not expected to start until the second half of this decade.” The storage capacity of the battery is relatively low, as it is not intended to meet energy needs, but mainly to be switched on to provide situational power support for the fuel cell, for example during peak loads while accelerating or while driving uphill fully loaded.”
South Korean tech firm LG has unveiled a smartphone with a larger screen which swivels out to reveal a second, smaller one underneath. The Wing’s second screen can either act independently of the larger screen while it is displaying a film, for example, or can complement it as a controller for gaming and media. The internal accelerometer, detects if the smartphone is being dropped and the pop-up camera will retract if it is in use. The hinge of the swivel screen is equipped with a hydraulic shock absorber, and the back of the main screen has a coating to prevent it scratching the smaller screen underneath. LG claims the hinge is “still reliable” after 200,000 swivels.
New research describes a novel way to sample the cells found at wounds – using discarded wound dressings. When comparing dressings from acute and chronic wounds, they found a significantly higher number of neutrophils at chronic wound sites. Neutrophils are the first line of defense in our immune system, and when a wound starts to form, they’re the first ones to arrive at the scene. These findings could help develop therapies that promote the process; for instance, those that neutralize excess neutrophils, or recruit macrophages, the immune cells that begin the next stage in healing after neutrophils.
The psychedelic experience of LSD is so expansive, it encompasses our entire experience of consciousness. A research team has now found that there’s actually a single amino acid (a building block) that’s unique to the receptor protein. When LSD binds to that protein, the trip begins. LSD is only a partial agonist, which means it binds to the receptor but only partially activates it. Eventually, those serotonin receptors end up activated, setting firing patterns in motion that block out the outside world, in the case of a trip. “Now we can use this information to, hopefully, discover better medications for many psychiatric diseases.”
Virgin founder Richard Branson is looking to raise $460 million to create a new special purpose acquisition company, or SPAC. SPACs, also known as blank check companies, are set up for the sole purpose of acquiring another company and listing it on the stock market, usually within a couple of years. The SEC-filing for VG Acquisition states that the pandemic has brought about “a rare opportunity to invest in fundamentally strong target businesses at attractive valuations.” Over the next two years, it will look for a company that operates in one of the Virgin Group’s core sectors such as travel, financial services, health, technology, music, and renewables.
About 60% of businesses that have closed during the coronavirus pandemic will never reopen, and restaurants have suffered the most, according to new data from Yelp. As of August 31, nearly 163,700 businesses on Yelp have closed since March 1, marking a 23% increase from July 10. Of those, about 98,000 say they’ve shut their doors for good. Of all closed businesses, about 32,100 are restaurants, and close to 61% have closed permanently.
