November 2020 – You Are the Placebo: Making Your Mind Matter – Dr Joe Dispenza

As I have spent more and more time looking into personal development, goal setting and mindset training, I have seen recurring references to spiritual practices such as gratitude, meditation and law of attraction. These seemingly ‘mystical’ practices have transformed millions of lives around the world in numerous ways from healing to amassing great fortunes. What I always struggled with was making the idea of faith and belief tangible and that’s where this book comes in.

Dr Joe Dispenza discusses the power of the human mind and body by merging science with spirituality, and how you too, can create life changing transformations. The book evaluates the power of the ‘placebo’; an inactive treatment which has time and time again resulted in surprisingly powerful results with visible physiological benefits. Based on this phenomenon, Dr Dispenza explains how placebos work and how we can create a similar mind and body connection to create the same positive outcomes without the need of a sugar pill.

What makes this book stand out is the use of science to provide actual and measurable evidence of change (i.e. before and after brain scans), which helps to demystify the concept of mindfulness and faith healing. Dr Dispenza provides numerous case studies based on his personal experiences as well his students, who have demonstrated transformative outcomes through thought alone. A number of biological processes which play role in these transformations are explained including genetics, neurochemistry and the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS). These seemingly complex topics are explained simply, making them easy to understand and digest.

The one criticism I would make is that a meditation script for changing your beliefs / perceptions is provided with the recommendation to record yourself reading the script or to purchase a recording (currently $25). It would have been valuable if the owner of the book could be eligible for a free download of the recording – this would help encourage the adoption and practicality of the advice offered in the book.

Nevertheless, the book is a great read and I would highly recommend it to everyone. It challenges the conventional ways of thinking and opens up a new realm of possibility. Due to the extensive range of information, it may take a few reads to fully absorb and understand the concepts but even so, a thoroughly interesting and informative read.
