AI used to reproduce ‘lost’ Picasso nude

Researchers have developed a five-step technology to reproduce artworks, that have been painted over. Their third reproduction bought back to life the Spanish artist’s depiction of a crouching nude woman; the painting was thought to have been lost until 2010 when X-rays revealed it lay behind The Blind Man’s Meal. By using a combination of spectroscopic imaging, artificial intelligence, and 3D printing, they created a full-size, full colour painting, which includes 3D textured brushstrokes. To help ensure the recreation was as close in look, feel and tone to the original, an AI algorithm analysed dozens of Picasso’s paintings and trained itself to understand the artist’s style.

Strange radio waves emerge from direction of the galactic centre

Astronomers have discovered unusual signals coming from the direction of the Milky Way’s centre. The radio waves fit no currently understood pattern of variable radio source and could suggest a new class of stellar object. “The strangest property of this new signal is that it is has a very high polarisation. This means its light oscillates in only one direction, but that direction rotates with time…The brightness of the object also varies dramatically, by a factor of 100, and the signal switches on and off apparently at random. We’ve never seen anything like it.”

Anti-cancer drug derived from fungus shows promise in clinical trials

A study in Clinical Cancer Research has shown that the new drug NUC-7738 has a up to 40 times greater potency for killing cancer cells than its parent compound, with limited toxic side effects. The naturally-occurring nucleoside analogue known as Cordycepin is found in the Himalayan fungus Cordyceps sinensis. However, it breaks down quickly in the blood stream. In order to improve its potency and clinically assess its applications as a cancer drug, researchers developed Cordycepin into a clinical therapy, using their novel ProTide technology, to create a chemotherapy drug with dramatically improved efficacy.
